kuš! Comics Residency - Open Call

We're very happy to announce the open call for comic artist residencies in Riga from December 2019 – May 2020.

Organised in collaboration with ISSP, kuš! will be hosting comic artists in a wonderful residency apartment in central Riga . This is a great opportunity for artists to focus on their projects in an inspiring environment away from home. In the same time ISSP will host photographers, this will create extra opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction between the residency participants. 

Who can apply?
Comic artists and other professionals working in the field of comics and illustrations. There are no limitations regarding age, background or style. The residents will be selected based on their applications.

Duration and timing
The applicants can choose to spend one or two months between December 2019 to May 2020 at the residency.

What we provide
- A private bedroom in the residency flat
- Participation at drink and draw to meet local comic artists
- Promotion of your project on our social media
- Individually we can agree with the residents to make an exhibition or hold a public talk or workshop
- Invitation letter so you can apply for public funding

What we expect from you
- You work on your own comics project (no relation to kuš! needed!)
- A presentation of the results of your work at the end of your residency
- The residents are expected to commit as full-time residents for the period of their stay

Cost
One month at the residency will cost 370 euros to cover the basic costs of the flat.
The selected participants will need to cover their travel and production cost by themselves. You'll get an official invitation letter from us, which you may use to apply for funding in your own country.

Accommodation and facilities
The artists-in-residence will reside in an apartment located near the city centre, which will be shared with two other residents in the field of comics and photography. Facilities: private bedroom, table, shared working space, bathroom, kitchen, wi-fi, scanner, bicycle.

Host town
Riga is the capital of Latvia, a country in the northeast of Europe next to the Baltic sea, not to be confused with Latveria, the fictional country ruled by Supreme Lord Doctor Doom. The city hosts an active cultural scene with plenty to discover. The countryside with beautiful forests and beaches can be reached easily by public transport.
