Europe 1:20'000'000

In the last few months we were working together with the Viennese KABINETT comic passage on a special book/exhibition project. We were invited by Heinz Wolf, Nicolas Mahler and Simon Häußle to make a special issue for the 10th anniversary in the MuseumsQuartier Vienna. The result:

EUROPE 1:20'000'000 (cover by Martins Zutis)

is out now and can be seen in the KABINETT in Vienna until the end of August, before it moves to Latvia. The book/exhibition EUROPE 1:20'000'000 is not about cartography – well, at least not in the customary sense of the word. Europe is inhabited by about 700 million people of whom 34 artists were invited to make exclusive comics about their country.  The book sets on an imaginary route through Europe. Like on a real journey, you might not always be able to visit every country. But here you get to visit 34 of approximately 50 European states on a shaky zigzag route starting in Latvia and finally leading to Austria. For the exhibition in the two "halls" the artists drew each a landscape and a portrait for this special European exhibition.

The involved artists are: Anna Deflorian (Italy), Anna Hilti (Liechtenstein), Bjarni Hinriksson (Iceland), Bob Byrne (Ireland), Branko Jelinek (Slovakia), Cem Dinlenmiş (Turkey),  Damir Steinfl (Croatia), Datto Machavariani (Georgia), Edda Strobl (Austria), Emelie Östergren (Sweden), Igor Baranko (Ukraine), Irkus M. Zeberio (Basque Country), Janek Koza (Poland), Julia Grigorieva (Russia), Jyrki Nissinen (Finland), Kaja Avberšek(Slovenia), Karolis Strautniekas (Lithuania), König Lü. Q. (Switzerland), Kristel Maamägi (Estonia), Lamelos (The Netherlands), Lenka Djorojevic (Montenegro), Liesbeth De Stercke (Belgium), Lucie Lomová (Czech Republic), Maja Veselinović (Serbia), Mari Kanstad Johnsen (Norway), Marijpol (Germany), Mārtiņš Zutis (Latvia), Michael Rytz (Denmark), Mitar Vasić (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Olive Booger (France), Pedro Burgos (Portugal), Scott Jason Smith (UK), Sorina Vazelina (Romania) and Zsolt Vidak (Hungary). The curator of it: David Schilter.

Now we want to show you some pictures of the project:

This is the KABINETT with the the two small halls, the space, the comics vending machine and a ceiling painting designed by Blanquet:

Here you can see the exhibition halls a bit closer:

Now some close-ups from the exhibition:

And some pictures from the opening event:

And this is the museum shop, where you can buy the comics 24/7 until the end of August:

The book (beautifully designed by Monika Gruzite) has 80 pages, 34 artists, format is 13cm x 18cm, soft cover, black and white comics is currently until the end of August exclusively available in Vienna at the KABINETT. After that it will also be available in Latvia.
