Open Call for š! #27 'BFFs'

UPDATE: The open call is over! Thanks for all the contributions. We answered all the artists now, when in doubt, write us.

After over two years it's finally time for a new open call for the kuš! anthology. Don't miss it, friends!

Excerpt from Hironori Kikuchi's comic 'Friends'

Full details of participation:

- Theme: BFFs ("Best Friends Forever")
- Page count: 4-16 (preferably even numbers)
- Language: English
- Format: DIN A6, width 10.5cm × height 14.8cm
- Bleed: In case you want your comics to be full bleed make sure to add 3 mm cut off space all around the comics (in this case the width of each page should be 11.1 cm and the height 15.4 cm). Don't place texts and important details close to the page borders (Bleed explained in a graphic).
- Colors: Yes, CMYK, b/w works are also welcome
- Resolution: 300 dpi (1200 dpi for b/w works)
- File format: preferably tiff or pdf
- If we publish your comics, you'll get at least 5 free copies
- Submit only low resolution jpgs for our consideration (but big enough to read (approximately 900 pixels in width)! The big resolution files as described above we'll ask you to send later.)
- please include a short description of yourself and a link to your site/blog
- Deadline: 26 September 2016
- Send to komiksukonkurss@gmail.com

Additional notes:

- After receiving your work we'll write you a confirmation e-mail within 7 days. If you don't hear from us, write us again, maybe your mail got lost.
- The decision what we'll publish will be made until 17 October. We'll mail you if you're in!
- We'd prefer if you don't publish the full comics on- or offline before we print it.
- The theme is BFFs, not BFFS, however you may interpret it very widely, also stories about the worst friends are welcome.
- If you have any questions, just write us. Best if you write a comment below, as other people might have the same question.
- We are always looking forward to see new approaches in storytelling and art. Don't limit yourself!

  1. Glad to see you're opening the floodgates! Question: are writer + artist teams allowed to submit? I.e., 2 people on 1 project? Thanks in advance!

    1. Yes, we're slightly worried about the approaching flood:)) But artist teams are still very welcome to take part!

  2. OMG!! Thanks for doing this! What publication rights do you offer? If my comic is accepted, can I reprint it later?

    1. Yes you keep the publication rights and can publish the story wherever you want, we just prefer to be the first ones:)

  3. This sounds super exciting!

Will you be accepting multiple submissions from the same author/team?
For example, if I draw an 8 page comic and a 16 page comic following the prompt can I submit both for consideration?

    1. Yes, we do accept multiple entries, but please don't send more than three. Also be aware that we'll not publish more that one comic per artist.

I would like to use some images previously published on blog as the basis for a submission, would this be ok?

  5. Sounds exciting!
One question though, is this going to be the same as "Urban Jungle", with rewards, or is it just for publication?

    1. No competition sponsors this time unfortunately. Every published contributor will just get a bunch of books.

  7. Are there any guidelines for what the description of yourself should be like?

  8. Hi there! should it have front and back cover?

    1. We'd prefer not, as it will be part of the anthology. You can make it as bonus if you plan to self-publish the story later. A title on top of the first page is enough, doesn't have to be a real title page, just dive right in.

    Hi!

I'm preparing the low resolution pages to send you my story, but when I shrink it (to 900 pixels width as you recommended) the image size shrinks down too. I tried to fix it but for now I can't succed. Do you have any tip? or since is this a preview, can I send it either way? Thanks for your time and patience, I admire the work you are doing here!

    1. Send it either way, we won't disqualify anything because of the wrong preview size.

    1. We just gathered all the comics and replied to all participants about the reception of the comics, but you'll need to be a bit more patient with us, there are a lot of submissions. Hopefully we manage to make the selection by the middle of October, then we'll write everyone again.
